Hands-On With the IBM 5150

I love this quote from Danielle Venton:

Klein’s 5150 made him a more capable thinker. My Air made me a faster consumer of media. I’m not about to trade in the Mac, but as I watch Klein’s easy competence while he replaces a blown video card and recalls his early programming days, I’m left with a slight twinge of jealousy. I wonder if technology hasn’t robbed me of some of its full experience in making things too easy for me.

The entire article, while somewhat light in content, describes a nostalgic journey that I hope most feel when they are confronted with "aging" technology.

Building an Accurate SNES Emulator

This is an incredibly geeky, yet entirely enjoyable essay describing some of what is required to build a more accurate classic game console software emulator. If you're a geek like I am, you'll enjoy this piece.

1Password Safari Shortcuts

For anyone using the 1Password Safari extension I suggest giving this guide a quick once-over. You would be suprised at the amount of time you could save yourself by memorizing a few key strokes.

Nintendo's Shareholders Want in on Mobile

John Biggs:

So what are shareholders really saying? To use a sports analogy, they’re telling Nintendo to trade their best players because of a down season. Nintendo’s real treasure isn’t the hardware or even the software, per se. It’s the good will, brand awareness, and nostalgia associated with their top games.

Nintendo, Apple and Linkbaiting

Peter Cohen found a large handful of popular site’s dirty laundry today following on the heels of the Nintendo/Apple story that surfaced earlier. Unfortunately, I succumbed to the same issue. My aim is to perform better research going forward, I do not feel (like I assume Mr. Cohen does) SEO gaming is a responsible strategy.

Life Beyond 13

'Black Hockey Jesus':

He’s stepping into the light of being the main character in a story that evades the reach of my narrative. He’s not my character to write anymore. He needs to be partially released to his friends and the perplexity of girls (or boys).

I wonder if I'll be as aware of my own needs and of my children's own when they reach that awkward and special age. A touching read, if a little voyeuristic.

Chris Kohler's Outlook on the Traditional Handheld Gaming Market

Chris Kohler:

But this is no longer a fight between two handheld gaming machines. It’s a fight between traditional handhelds and smartphones. Sony doesn’t need to show what Vita can do that 3DS can’t — it needs to show why you’d pay $40 per game when the competition’s price is $0.

The consoles' price is one factor to consider but I believe it's Mr. Kohler's second sentence, the obscenely high cost per game, that makes traditional console/handheld gaming market unappealing. When similar levels of enjoyment can be had out of a 99¢ game and consumed in a way that is convenient to the consumer, not the middle-man distributer, I find it difficult to argue otherwise.

What is this Place?

This is the weblog of the strangely disembodied TRST. Here it attempts to write somewhat intelligibly on, well, anything really. Overall, it may be less than enticing.
